January 9, 2009 First Hawaii Youth Skateboarder to Compete for the National Championship in Minnesota
Local ten-year-old competitive skateboarder Heimana Reynolds from Aina Haina qualified for the national finals in the King of the Groms skateboard competition by taking first place in two out of three events in his respected divisions at the 7th Annual King of the Groms 12 and Under Skateboard Contest series held in Simi Valley, CA. Reynolds was competing in the bowl, mini-ramp and street course. He is the only youth skateboarder out of Hawaii to ever qualify for this event two years in a row.
Based on his accomplishments, Reynolds, a student at Punahou, received an invitation to be the first-ever local skateboarder to compete in the national competition on February 20th - 22nd, 2009 at 3rd Lair Skatepark in Minneapolis, MN.
At the early age of 10, Reynolds is one of the top ranked skaters in the country in his age group. Skateboarding is one of the fastest growing sports in America and with the Olympic Committee considering adding skateboarding to the list of sports in 2012, Heimana Reynolds has set his sights on bringing a medal home to Hawaii.
Reynolds has been very fortunate to have companies see his potential and support his growth. Sponsorships from Quiksilver Hawaii, Monster Energy, Macbeth Shoes, Active and Wahoos do their part to see that he has every chance to one day become a pro skater and join such pro circuits as XGames and the Dew Tour.
In addition, Reynolds receives a lot of support from his father Matt, who not only works to support the growth of his son, but also has developed a company to help other young, talented skaters reach their potential. Local 808 Skateboard Team is made up of those talented skateboarders who not only excel in ability, but also have the right attitude to reach the next level.
