Hawaii Kai Track Club Gets Jump on Summer

Hawaii Kai Track Club’s summer program is off and running … and jumping and throwing. It's quite the summer bargain.

The $55 fee pays for everything, and it’s a substantial list:

  • Two workouts a week at the Kaiser High track with experienced coaches.
  • Registration with USA Track & Field, which pays for insurance and allows them to compete in sanctioned meets.
  • A uniform shirt.
  • Pictures at the end of the season.
  • Entry to as many as six meets at various tracks on Oahu. Younger kids can do three events each meet; those 13 and up are allowed four events.

Coach Steve Jacobson said the club accepts kids of all skill levels from novice to accomplished. He emphasized that to get the full value of the program, kids are encouraged to attend all practices. But, he said all the coaches realize that summers are filled with camps, family vacations and other activities, so the atmosphere of the team is pretty relaxed.

Other coaches involved are Gary Waid, Dick Sutton, Dennis Swart and Kevin Kruszona.

Practice times are 4 PM for athletes 13 and older and 4:45 PM for the younger ones. Practices last about an hour and a half, stretching a little longer as the kids get in better shape later in the season, Jacobson said.

He said even though signups were held the last week in May, the club can add athletes to its final roster up until June 20.

Meets are held on consecutive Saturdays from June 6 through July 11. The July 4 meet is the Oahu individual championship and the July 11 meet is the relay championship.
