Work to Break Up Boulder on Ridge Above Niu Valley

A seven to 10-ton boulder that was moved and secured at a safe location atop a ridge overlooking Niu Valley last weekend, will now be broken up into smaller pieces, bagged and removed by a contractor Monday Sept. 26 through Friday Sept. 30.
On Monday, DLNR’s contractor Janod Inc. will break up the round rock into smaller pieces and bag them for future transport and removal by helicopter.
On Tuesday morning, the contractor will continue to prepare broken rocks for a helicopter lift and prepare a staging area for new materials (meshing, cables, fence posts) to be lifted up onto the ridge. In the afternoon, removal of rocks to designated location & transport new materials to ridge by helicopter.
On Wednesday, workers will install a fence, anchors, and ring nets at the second rock outcrop and begin breaking up the slab.
On Thursday, the contractor will continue to prepare and bag broken rocks and transport to designated location by helicopter.
On Friday, the contractor will clean up site and transport all unused materials & equipment by helicopter.
This remaining work does not require the evacuation of residents below.
“With careful consideration and in partnership with state and county agencies, we will be completing the safe removal of the boulder, broken into smaller pieces and bagged, and doing everything we can to ensure the public’s safety. The Department appreciates the homeowners’ and public’s cooperation in mitigating this hazardous situation,” said DLNR Chairperson William J. Aila, Jr.
Under Act 76, the Governor has the discretion to direct state employees to enter private property to mitigate situations deemed hazardous, such as unstable rocks. DLNR, in coordination with State Civil Defense and the City and County of Honolulu stepped in for public safety under the auspices of this act to remove the unstable boulder and a second outcropping rock.
