September 29, 2011 Afternoon trail closure set October 4 for helicopter lifts
The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) will close the Diamond Head summit trail in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 4, from 12 noon to 6 p.m., as part of ongoing summit trail improvements. The trail will reopen Wednesday, October 5, at 6 a.m. as normal.
For public safety, the Division of State Parks will close the summit trail at noon so that hikers will be off the trail when a helicopter begins to fly in materials for future renovations of the ledge area outside of the Fire Control Station.
Work on the narrow ledge area where hikers exit the Fire Control Station will begin as part of the new “loop” and ledge improvement project for the summit trail. Funding for this project was provided by Capital Improvement Project (CIP) funds appropriated by the Legislature.
During work on the ledge area, hikers will be temporarily diverted to the new trail section to reach the summit.
“Our contractor firm Global Specialty Contractors is doing its best to limit trail closures,” said William J. Aila, Jr., DLNR Chairperson. “We appreciate the public’s patience and cooperation as we work to make the trail a better and safer experience.”
State Parks personnel will be stationed at the summit and escort people down starting at 1 p.m. The trail will not reopen for the rest of that day. DLNR appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this brief closure.
