Hawaii Kai halau to perform in Waikiki

Kumu Hula Shirley Kanemura Recca gracefully sways like a willowy palm caressed by gentle tradewinds as a group of young students mimic her fluid movements. Halau Hula 'O Namakahulali, an award-winning halau that has been in existence for more than a decade, resides in Hawaii Kai's Hahaione School, and Shirley is devoted to guiding students of all ages and skill levels to master the ancient and beautiful art form. The halau has entertained at many noteworthy functions, including Governor Cayetano's inauguration celebration, the Miss Universe Pageant, Aloha Bowl halftime, and Molehu I Waikiki.

On Sunday, April 30th, the halau will be performing at the Torch Lighting and Hula Show held at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound near the Duke Kahanamoku Statue, on Uluniu and Kalakaua Avenues. The show features a torch lighting ceremony, followed by a terrific performance by the award-winning halau. The event will begin at 6:30 PM (lawn seating).
