Fitness Resolution to Fitness Lifestyle
The secret to your fitness and nutrition is found in the 3 P's, Part 3

by KEONI SUBIONO
Sun columnist

Isn't it funny that by the time March rolls around, New Year's Resolutions are a distant memory and we are all in our comfort zones ready for our summer vacation?

Hopefully, for you the only comfort you're experiencing is in your jeans, because you've already made fitness your lifestyle. You brush you teeth every day and you shower every day, right? Well, you have to focus on your fitness and nutrition every day; it's got to be a lifestyle.

One of the secrets to your fitness and nutrition lifestyle is a simple concept I call the "3 P's." The 3 P's stand for Plan, Prep and Pack. They're very important because they help you to control your circumstances, so you're always ready for what life throws at you.

Plan Nutrition: If you want to be lean, fit and healthy, you can't just go about your day not knowing what and when you're going to eat next. Don't wait till you're hungry to find something to eat; by then it's too late.

Do you need to grocery shop? Do you need to pack food for the day? Do you have the proper containers? Does your food need be chilled? Do you have a refrigerator at your office? Are you going to be on the road all day? Are there healthy restaurants where you'll be working today? Where are you going to schedule your lunch meeting? The kids will be hungry after school when you pick them up, are you going to eat what they eat?

One more point: always have some kind of quality nutrition on you or in your bag at all times. Never be caught empty handed, a small bag of raw almonds or baby carrots may come in handy. Otherwise, a piece of fruit or a nutrition bar will work.

Plan Fitness: Know what your weekly regimen is. Don't let it be whatever you feel like it should be that day. Plan for it; get regimented. What do you need for your workouts? Where are you going to work out each day? Where are you going to do your cardio? What are your weight training options? How many sets and reps? Do you even know what you should be doing?

Prep Nutrition: Prepping your food is another essential habit. It's just a matter of getting your "Grab and Go" nutrition ready. Some people hate cooking. Eating right is not so much about the cooking; it's more about the prepping. You don't have to be a five-star chef; just get all the simple ingredients ready to go, like your fruits and vegetables. Get creative, some things like tuna, chicken breast, salmon, brown rice and sweet potatoes require very little culinary expertise.

And eating out is not the answer. Remember, a restaurant's main priority is to make food TASTE good. And fat, sugar, sodium, butter, cream and oil all enhance flavor, so beware.

Prep Fitness: Prepping for fitness is easy. Just have your gym bag in your car at all times. Have an extra set of workout clothes and shoes in the trunk or at the office. Make sure you have water and workout towels.

Pack Nutrition: Pack up your day's meals and take them with you. Make sure you have appropriate containers. You can get the inexpensive Ziplock version almost anywhere, that way if you lose them, your wife won't go crazy on you. Don't forget the forks, spoons or napkins that you may need. A good soft cooler is always convenient to have. The Hawaiian Cooler Company makes some good ones.

Pack Fitness: Again, pack up your fitness gear so you have it with you at all times.
