Business Spotlight: Brick House Personal Training

"Ow, she's a brick----house!

She's mighty mighty,

Just lettin' it all hang out.

She's a brick----house!

That lady's stacked,

And that's a fact,

Ain't holdin' nothin' back..."

Do those lyrics bring back a few memories? They should. Lionel Richie and The Commodores topped the charts with this track back in the day. And, it was on the top of Kim Chalekian's mind when she was contemplating a name for her personal training studio. "I was inspired by the song because it talked about a woman's body being mighty (not bulky), which it should be, but I also like the term for men because it represents strength and stability."

So, Brick House Personal Training was born and they opened their doors in mid-March of this year at the Niu Valley Center. With its brick-faced entry wall, wood floors, and papaya and lime hued walls you might mistake it for a day spa. "It's not your average gym," Chalekian said of the facility that she co-owns. "It doesn't look like a gym, it doesn't smell like a gym; it's a private, personal training studio. It's not intimidating, there are no crowds or lines of people waiting for equipment and you don't have to be in shape to come here. We'll get you in shape and we guarantee it!"

At Brick House, you train privately one-on-one with your personal trainer and there are never more than two clients training at the same time.

"We focus on engaging and servicing our clients. We've got their bottled water, towel and personalized regimen waiting for them; all they have to do is show up. And by the time they leave, they feel empowered and ready to take on the rest of their day. When a person has an expert fitness professional that actually cares, they're held accountable, and ten times more likely to see results," Chalekian stated of her approach to personal training. "So, they lose the weight, gain confidence, lower cholesterol and increase energy, all from a balanced fitness and nutrition regimen."

The client perspective is no different, "I like that I'm not doing it on my own. I need that extra motivation and the expert coaching. I'm finally able to stay consistent with proper eating and exercise. I'm never on a diet, yet the weight still comes off!" exclaimed Joan Sakata of Niu Valley.

Roslyn Mason of Hawaii Kai is also having a good experience. "The staff at Brick House has given me the key to unlock my own transformation - not just physically, but also emotionally - helping me to succeed with workable and enjoyable fitness and nutrition lifestyle changes. I just feel so much better!"

Chalekian herself was once a personal training client of fitness professional Keoni Subiono, at the Oahu Club. She suffered for many years with agonizing back pain and severe migraine headaches. "I was about to turn 40 and I was a wreck. I didn't want it to be like that, I knew I had to do something," Chalekian said of her previous state.

"Long story short, I started training with Keoni and the back pain and migraines went away. I felt better than I had in years. The timing was perfect because my kids were older and I was ready for a new career. After 11 years of overtime mom, I was ready to work again. I considered a few other careers and then Keoni recommended I become a trainer. So, I joined his team at his new facility in Manoa and made it a point to shorten the learning curve of a personal trainer. It was a roller coaster ride but I managed to make it through the crash course with Keoni's mentorship. Then the opportunity arose for me to help open Brick House, so I took it and here I am today."

Brick House Personal Training is located in the back section of the Niu Valley Center at 549 East Halemaumau. If you're ready to get into the best shape of you life, call (808) 271-1939 to book a complimentary consultation.
